Zero Emissions Innovation Centre (ZEIC) posted that Vancouver Mayor and Council should listen to builders who support keeping fossil gas out of new buildings. Electrified new buildings do not increase housing costs or delay building. Decarbonization is critical to reduce methane emissions from buildings, one of the highest contributors to GHGs in the Lower Mainland.
On Nov 26, 2024 Vancouver Council will discuss and vote to reverse the bylaw banning gas installation from new buildings. Many climate action groups and even building trades and developers see this as a huge step backwards at a time of climate catastrophe: atmospheric rivers, cyclone bombs, drought, and more, just in the Vancouver area!

What's driving housing costs in hashtag#Vancouver? It's not climate policies for new construction.
We surveyed BC's building industry, and 65 members of Vancouver's development, construction, design, and supply chain sectors responded. Here's what we learned about the impact of Vancouver's climate-friendly building bylaws:
👷🏽♀️ These policies aren't driving housing costs or slowing construction
🏗️ Industry is already largely meeting existing energy & emissions requirements
🏠 Demand for energy-efficient homes is rising—presenting big economic opportunities
