In April, FTFO composed a petition directed to the BC government.
Your petitioners respectfully request that the Honourable House introduce a comprehensive plan that guarantees success in meeting British Columbia’s GHG emission targets. This plan must, in part, include a carbon tax on all aspects of the LNG process; a fracking study that includes human health effects and an accounting of methane release; subsidies for the clean and job creating solar, wind and thermal technologies but not oil and gas.
In September FTFO board members met with Penticton Liberal MLA Dan Ashton and presented the petition with signatures that had been collected by FTFO and Citizens’ Climate Lobby Nelson-West Kootenay. At a cordial 25 minute meeting, Mr. Ashton expressed support for addressing climate change and agreed to present the petition to the legislature.
On October 23, MLA Ashton presented the petition in Victoria although the petition wording was not read into the record. The Privy Council declined to accept it due to the budget implications addressed. FTFO will be forwarding the petition to BC government ministers and MLAs so that they are aware of the points covered in the petition.
